ABOUT KARINA
Karina always knew she would dedicate her life to telling important stories — and more importantly, work to do them justice.
As a reporter with CBC News in Calgary, Karina's work often reaches national (and sometimes international) audiences, and locally it has led to policy change. Her work has also appeared in Global News, The Star and other outlets across Canada.
In 2021, Karina was one of a dozen Canadian student journalists awarded with the CBC News Joan Donaldson Scholarship, where she worked for newsrooms and programs in Toronto and Yellowknife. She was also a Fellow with the Institute for Investigative Journalism, where she contributed to two major national investigations, including the award-winning 'Tainted H2O' investigation into lead in Canada's drinking water. Karina was also selected as the Community Podcast Initiative's first Podcaster-In-Residence, where she produced and hosted a six-part series on the experiences of children of immigrants.
Nowadays, Karina often covers Calgary's newfound housing crisis and other issues that affect community members of all backgrounds. She has also reported on issues like blood donation restrictions for sexually active gay men, the mental health support needs of racialized communities and the shortcomings of Canada's immigration system (but can also have fun writing about things like blood-shooting lizards).
Karina graduated with a 3.9 GPA from Mount Royal University with a Bachelor of Communications with a major in journalism and a minor in social innovation. In university, she co-founded and produced four issues of an annual print magazine called Femme Handbook which won a grant through the JMH LaunchPad Pitch Competition.
When Karina isn't working, you can find her cuddled up with her miniature dachshund, planning her next trip and daydreaming about being a barista again.
